Female Literature Deserves the Same Regognition as Traditional Male Lit

Female Literature Deserves the Same Regognition as Traditional Male LiteratureLiterary critic, Jane Tompkins targets the male-dominated scholarly tradition that controls both the canon of American literature - and the critical perspective that interprets the canon for society (502), in her exploration of the canonical exclusion of Kate Chopins The Awakening, written in 1899, and Charlotte Perkins Gilmans 1892 short story, The Yellow Wallpaper. Tompkins further notes that the tradition of Perry Miller, F.O. Matthiessen, Harry Levin, Richard Chase, R.W.B. Lewis, Yvor Winters, and Henry Nash Smith has prevented even committed feminists from recognizing and asserting the value of a powerful and specifically womanly novelistic tradition (502-3). Tompkins criticism of the scholarly tradition not only asserts the existence of a male-dominated literary paradigm and exclusivity but, with this literary gate delivering, also questions how tradition becomes imprinted upon us so as to color o ur popular opinion. Tradition becomes the constant, the thing we write, read, rebel against and, interestingly, the thing we supplant with a new tradition once we are excluded from the established boys club. But how does a so staunchly established tradition, which determines the inclusion and exclusion of literary works, come to be? Tompkins posits the existence of a male-centered agenda that masks its biases as universal standards of aesthetic judgment (503). These universal standards of aesthetics are subsequently biased against domains which have traditionally been declared feminine. Tompkins and so contends that twentieth-century critics have taught generations of students to equate popularity with debasement, emotionality with ... ...knowledging and paying homage to the powers that we keep in power, all in the name of tradition. Tradition is a paradox, for it oftentimes seems bigger than us our own creation becomes a wall, seemingly insurmountable and impenetrable, that i ndeed crumbles by our own questioning and refutation. Anne Bradstreet :: essays papers

Anne Bradstreet Anne Bradstreets poetry reflects Puritan thinking like sunlight softly shimmering on a quiet country pond. There is life and some(prenominal) activity just below the quiet surface, yet iodine must look below to discover its depth. As the first notable poet in American literature, it is fitting that this young woman, a product of an atypical upbringing, should use her extensive education to express thought and emotion well beyond the literature of her time. Still, her writings always reflected the natural values and religious foundation of her time period. In the poem IN REFERENCE TO HER CHILDREN she writes , I had eight birds hatched in one nest, Four cocks there were, and hens the rest. I nursed them up with pain and care, Nor cost , nor labour did I spare, Till at the last they felt their wing, Mounted trees and knowledgeable to sing ( 1 6 ). This imagery is in truth concrete, she need not describe the chirping of the fledglings or the rustling of the l eaves as the nest sways gently on its tree-living perch. Yet the reader provides this filler because she writes in a manner that is familiar to us all. Certainly it is familiar to the Puritans, who no doubt were in tune with nature. The very survival of the Puritans depended on their interaction and understanding of nature. Although, she expresses her instinctive motherly concerns in her writing , the poem ends in an expression of realistic resolve to the inevitable motorbike of life. Farewell, my birds, farewell adieu, I happy am, if well with you. It is not only her observations that Anne Bradstreet shares with us, but she truly lets her feelings take form in her prose. This is really the first time in American literature that an author has opened the door to the room of their inner emotions. In fact, she never really thought that they would be published or steady read at all by anyone else. What a loss it would have been to us all if we never had the opportunity to sh are Anne Bradstreets experiences with her. She had much to cristal even though she was critical of her own writings. Icon or Symbol: A Teachers Moral Dilemma :: Education Teaching Papers

Icon or Symbol A Teachers Moral DilemmaWorks Cited MissingIt all in all happened so quickly. One flash I was at my blackboard, the next moment I was between two juvenile males who were trying to prove a pride point with their fists. I had, without a conscious thought about it, drawn a crown on the board. Next I heard chairs hitting the floor and screams of profanity. I was called a not-so-nice holler by one of my students, followed by his strange comment We know who your favorites in this class are. Another student from across the room overturned his chair and, steer coming fast, managed to get out the words Dont get on her, man. And dont you never mess with the crown Dont mess with my blood, man Then they were at each others throats and I was between them, not knowing what had happened.I work at a juvenile prison for all male offenders. Quite honestly, I feel as if my students and I speak different languages sometimes. After talking to students and counselors after this incident , I discovered that the crown I had drawn to represent Prince Hamlet of Denmark was interpreted as a gang symbol by the members of my class. By drawing the crown, I had somehow affiliated myself with the Ghetto Boys of Indianapolis. This angered my students who consider themselves members of a rival gang. What would Shakespeare think of such(prenominal) a situation?I guess the real question is what do I think about such a situation and how do I define my role in the classroom? Peirces theory of signs and his classification from the point of view of the object of the sign (representant) is helpful in understanding this classroom incident. Peirce defined a sign as anything which is so determined by something else, called its object, and so determines an effect upon a person, which effect I call its interpretant (Houser 257). In this view, educators use signs all of the time, to interact with students. In fact, in his article Toward a Peircean Theory, Nathan Houser relates Peirces bel ief that signs are the matter, or the substance of thought (257). Peirce goes even further to say that life itself is a train of thought (Houser 256). In other words, life and signs are fundamentally related and unseparable for all humans (Houser 257). As a teacher, I present my students with signs (representants) in hopes of helping them to understand information.

Benefits and drawbacks of online social networking

A certain part of society advocates that social media channels are dominance powerful tools when building new and up-to-date individual and joint relationships in many fields of actions, whilst others hold the view that the ostentatious aspects of virtual ne iirking are endangering the agreed values for the welfare of hatful and communities along decades. The former and the last mentioned points of view will be enlarged below. On the one hand, arguments against social networking related to Individuals endorse the Idea of measuring how decisive -for personal and professional future-, are those unerasable marks In peoples noncurrent that live supposedly been left behind time frames are recorded including achievements and failures, as well as personal history. This as meant for many, that when trying to start a new life, a new career or just simply a different path in life, past follows their efforts Jeopardizing it.What is more, in many occasions, these unpleasant situations must be faced and justified by them very(prenominal) valuable professionals end up non having the same opportunities than those who have not been that exposed to the media. This nooky be illustrated by the cases when employers have been looking for the most suitable candidates for a position. They would dig Into their curriculum vitae and would look for any canvas that, by searching n social networks then, could lead to any apparently hidden personal information saying more than printed rsums. In addition, latent companies can tangibleize how much time people spend posting, commenting or sharing In social media as well as the type and the choice of Information spread by these users. All in all, In a professional environment, people do not want the personal information be exposed to every friend of theirs or even to public. Thus, something as simple as an Internet session is brought as a menace into themselves when privacy is compromised.Another two reasoning stick outing the down side of online social networking highlight the fact that our society is increasingly becoming more individualistic and networking can exacerbate social differences between societies in or out the Internet or globalization gentleman. Online networking is a time-consuming activity taking time away from other activities and taking over from real time Interaction. Loneliness Is a modern Illness that society has claimed to have as a consequence of non-satisfying relationships.Research has shown that friendships has helped people to develop heir resilience and index to bounce back after adversity, as well as an ability to gain dramatic consequences on health because it disrupts sleep, raises blood pressure, increases depression and lowers immunity and general subjective wellbeing, sense of smell isolated from others can cause mental health problems occurring more frequently in unequal societies where vulnerable people are oftentimes left behind. And when globalization exalts societies with high standards of connectivity in detriment of those who depend on factors such as governmental policies, local economic system ND population, is not it unfair when trying to build new basics for the new eras humankind? By treating social networks as incidental, individuals and society as a whole, are neglecting the healthy double-edged sword of exposing lives, radical preferences, political inclinations among others, privileging amount of information rather than quality shared. On the other hand and from an individual point of view, social networking can be employed as a very useful tool for those who need to unveil difficult personal issues such as getting out of the mechanical press or revealing illnesses in front of others in this way, not only can they be examined and evaluated by their acquaintances but they can also gain support from their family, friends and community. At the same time, by sharing concerns, interests, and knowledge or study subjects, individuals can e nrich the perspective of their own interests while others interact with them. For example, someone who has been feeling isolated because of a very rare illness can post his/ her feelings, inquire about symptoms, look for financial support when this person is trundling with the situation and what is more, can also find a cure when someone else in somewhere else take notice of this suffering. People can also obtain advice of goods and services or Just simply gain awareness of some situations that may potentially affect them in a positive or negative way.Experts have demonstrate how important social networking has become when a natural disaster such a seaquake occurs a piece of news reaches an isolated location ahead the main wave strikes the land saving many lives. It is seemed that individual existences are put into a more employ society when sharing their woes and concerns, transforming a finical issue into common interest. Is it history, memories and traditions constitutive part of the common interest then?As it has been mentioned many times, another argument in favor of social media is vernacular awareness. This is to say and from a collective point of view, by understanding society with its failures and achievements, different societies have been able to considerate diverse ways of reaching anticipate goals when learning from the past. By way of example, social media has proved to be an inexhaustible resource of knowledge while exposing key information, requirements, unknown facts or simply people searching for people.Someone inquiries into a partially well-known fact and within few minutes somebody else is replying with clues, advice or Just hints which open new doors to new questions or potential answers. This can also be endless, but what if society wants to honor a dead person or keeps memories by spreading these facts around? The inexhaustible transfer of information through media is invaluable when hidden events and key people come then to light. In the end, associations constitutes a positive input in the climb of building knowledge and consciousness of where, why and how the world has evolved.By way of conclusion and from a user of the Web-based group standpoint, todays society cannot deny the new era that the world is living in. The main bone of contention is about how society should learn, teach and wisely trespass the appropriate ways of using the media. Online communities and Blobs are becoming very popular and moreover, since the advancement of embedded systems, people an use them on the go with the help of cutting-edge handheld devices.Because of the ease of sharing information -with the help of embedded ikon and video-, the whole world has become interactive in nature for better or worse. Similarly, people as individuals and as part of communities, are exploring the unthinkable potential that making connections through online sessions and are finally comprehending that the opportunities provided from this medium are immense social networking website is a revolutionary idea with a very bright future with further scope for advancements in the 21st century.

Deviance and Social Control Essay

Deviance is part of every culture and society, it is the border line between acceptable and intolerable behavior. Each micro society holds its own definition as to what deviant behavior actually is. The deviant is one to whom that track has successfully been applied, deviant behavior is behavior that batch label. with out history, there is no doubt in my mind that deviant citizens have been a contri saveing part to each generation. It is all relative, a label of deviance remains a label of deviance the question that remains really is what is deviance?. Being labeled as an outside is not unknown for some flock. Matter of fact it is acceptable and a norm to be labeled as deviant for some people. No matter what group of people you deal with through out history or life today, there are social rules written and some metres unwritten, nonetheless meant to be broken. For example, freshman category I attended St. Rose High School and got caught texting my mom on my cell resound while sw itching mobes. Getting to the point, I ended up losing my phone for a month and getting in a whole load of trouble (I was then silently labeled as deviant for the rest of my time there) for something as simple as texting. If I whipped my phone out in Manasquan High School 99% of the time teachers do not pull down tell apart anything at all because they could care less. Such a backwards wrong act of defiance should be nationally recognized through out schools everywhere, but its not like that. Deviance is defined in so many different ways it not only differentiates from school to school, it changes in the eye of parents too. For example, Johhny came home at 1205am on Saturday night, and as a result got grounded for Saturday. Jessie strolled in at 1230am on Friday night, and came home at 100am on Saturday with no troubles at all. What Im trying to say is deviant behavior is not even a real thing, it is just defined by your surroundings. Am I the victim or the crime for getting all o f these detentions? Am I really doing anything that terrible compared to everyone else? A lot of questions come up to me that are so simply understood by me I dont even want to take the time to write about them or use my breath to express my opinion. In Mr. Roachs class I wrote a paper in pen instead of typing it because my printer had malfunctioned (affirmed by a note from my dear mother) and Mr. Roach gave me a 0%, even though I did the entire paper by hand. Knowing me, Mr. Marden, of shape I then acted deviantly by releasing the word F$. I didnt even say it towards Mr. Roach or loud so the class could hear it. I just said F%$*. My act of defiance led to 2 days suspension. Since then, I have been counting every scourge word Ive heard by scholarly persons and teachers in Manasquan High School since then, and have seriously counted 647 curse words. Not one of those times did another student get F$%&ing suspended for two days. Its all backwards. Fifty years ago if a girl wore a sk irt that showed her knee caps people would assume she was a deviant girl. Nowadays girls wear skirts that show just about everything, and hey Im fine with that and it seems everyone else is too. Deviant acts are just a definition by each generation. Things that were once unacceptable are now norms. Being gay 200 years ago was the same as creation the devil. But now people generally accept it. All around the world deviance behavior is being redefined and rewritten but one thing endlessly stays the same, and that is simply the fact that people will remain being deviant, no matter what the definition actually is. The idea of deviance would not even exist if it wasnt for those types of people. (probably me too, but Im just a deviant idiot that has no idea what Im doing)
